OBJECTIVE: SHOOT 1 ROLL / 400 ISO BW FILM
Shoot images in low light and night situations – these can be indoor with a limited light source or out doors at dusk / evening. Using a tripod, compose images or choose scenes that you feel you would like to shoot – try to be as creative as possible. Movement is NOT a requirement for this assignment. Bracket each composition as you utilize the "B" (bulb) setting of the camera. Calculate the correct exposure as you bracket each scene and log your shots.
VOCABULARY
Reciprocity Law Failure - all film has limits and it is important to understand the relationship between shutter speeds and aperture that will ensure correct exposure. In exposures briefer than 1/1000 or longer than 1 second the predictable relationship between shutter and aperture begins to break down, the film becomes less sensitive to light in these situations and you may need to increase your exposure time beyond what your meter recommends.
Rule of Thumb to Compensate for Reciprocity Failure
ALWAYS BRACKET IN UNSURE SITUATIONS to an OVER exposure that will get more information on the film and the effect you are looking for...
If your light meter suggests 1 second – increase by 1/2 stop - use the aperture for best results
~ Meter suggests 10 seconds – increase by 1 stop
~ Meter suggests 40 seconds – increase by 2 stops
Shooting ASSIGNMENT_ shoot 36 exposures BW film & log your exposures
Consider composition and light carefully when shooting and choosing image situations – bracket (3 shots per scene) and log as necessary for your situations
o Illuminated signs – fair ground
o Flood lit buildings or parks with lighted areas
o Traffic trails
o Sunset or sunrise
o Fire light or candle light - people
PRINTING REQUIREMENT
2 PRINTS

Shooting ASSIGNMENT_ shoot 36 exposures BW film & log your exposures
Consider composition and light carefully when shooting and choosing image situations – bracket (3 shots per scene) and log as necessary for your situations
- Use a tripod for your scene, but movement is NOT a required element for your imagery
- Illustrate conceptual and technical thought when composing images for the roll - stay within your personal interests.
- Be creative – some ideas for subjects/techniques
o Illuminated signs – fair ground
o Flood lit buildings or parks with lighted areas
o Traffic trails
o Sunset or sunrise
o Fire light or candle light - people
PRINTING REQUIREMENT
2 PRINTS
- Choose TWO DIFFERENT images of varied subject matter from your night exposure roll
- Images should consider composition and light carefully – look for negatives with a fair amount of detail
- SIZE: 8x10 or 5x7 Paper Format – print with any type of border that you feel best suits the image and its negative quality
- Images should illustrate conceptual and technical thought as well as evidence of basic elements such as:
